Careers of History Majors

The undergraduate degree in history provides a strong liberal arts education. Undergraduates have gone on to many exciting careers, in a wide variety of fields. The degree also lays a solid foundation for those students wishing to pursue graduate studies in numerous academic areas. Many majors continue to expand their knowledge of history in their graduate studies. Those students may aim for careers as museum directors, curators, technicians and specialists. They may become exhibit developers, conservators, exhibit designers and specialists, or choose other such related fields. Some students choose paths where their history background can enhance another area of study. Law, business administration, political science, library science, visual and performing arts and communication are just some of the academic areas that can connect closely with history. Many public organizations and private companies with an interest or need for historical development rely on lawyers, business administrators, librarians, writers and artists with a strong knowledge of history. All University of Dayton students are fortunate to have frequent contact with their academic advisors, who can guide them toward the career path best suited to them.

Listed below are the careers that many history students pursue. Some may require graduate level study. This information was taken from the websites of the American Historical Association and the Smithsonian Institution.
