The Department of Music at the University of Dayton strives to provide accessible and up-to-date facilities. Department facilities are enhanced by the attentive support of department faculty.
The MALL
The Bro. Todd Ridder, S.M. Musical Arts Learning Lab (MALL) was established in 1995 and is housed in the Music and Theatre Building. This multi-use facility has twelve computer MIDI workstations, three listening stations, and houses the department's collection of recorded materials. All computers have Internet access via standard web browsers, because some music courses use web-based materials, especially music theory, which utilizes the department's own Maestro web server.
The MALL also has a cataloging computer for its audio resources and for access to both the Roesch Library catalog and the OhioLINK catalog (more than eighty Ohio academic libraries). There are two mobile presentation stations (with overhead projectors) available for use in classrooms.
Students use computers extensively in music theory, aural skills, music history and literature, composition, arranging, and marching band methods classes. Music tutors, students hired by the Department of Music, meet with other students in the MALL and use its facilities. The MALL is now a centrally-supported computer laboratory. Damon Sink, coordinator of MALL computer operations, along with Dr. Mark Brill, coordinator of MALL media operations, work together to bring technical and software support to the students.
Theater Performance
The H. Troy and Eileen Sears Recital Hall is a 183-seat facility located in the Jesse Philips Humanities Center. The larger Boll Theater is located in the John F. Kennedy Union. Both auditoriums are frequently used for performances by the department’s ensembles. The Boll Theater is the primary location for a variety of faculty and senior recitals. Many ensembles perform for special events in the Torch Lounge, also located in Kennedy Union, as well as locations away from campus.
