EXPLORE MUSIC:

Chaminade Scholars in Music

What is the Chaminade Scholar Program?

The Chaminade Scholar Program is at the heart of the University of Dayton’s Program for Christian Leadership, which was initiated by a grant from the Lilly Endowment. The program challenges students to explore their life’s work as a response to God’s call and to make commitments of service to their professions, churches and communities.

Could this program be right for me?

Students who are gifted with musical talent and leadership ability are in a particularly unique position to be leaders of musical worship. The Chaminade Scholar Program, in collaboration with the Department of Music and Campus Ministry, seeks to develop in these students combined musical talent and leadership skill, so that these students may continue to serve their communities as music ministers after graduation from the University of Dayton.

  • Students must be musically talented, motivated, and active in the Department of Music.
  • Students must be interested in church and community service activities.
  • Students must be willing to explore their vocation and consider seriously the vocation of music ministry.
  • Students must possess a sincere desire to grow in their faith through a combination of prayer, reflection, study, and practice.

What is expected of Chaminade Scholars in Music?

If admitted to the program, students must participate in all Chaminade Scholar activities, retreats, and classes. Chaminade Scholars complete a four-course series of specially designed academic seminars that help to fulfill University General Education Requirements.

Chaminade Scholars are expected to attend the “Summer Workshop in Leadership and Vocation” sponsored by the Program for Christian Leadership. These workshops take place the summer before the student’s first year on campus.

Students must participate each year in the Annual Liturgical Music Workshop, which is held on the UD campus during the fall semester.

Students must participate regularly in music ministry at local churches. Catholic students are expected to be involved in music ministry for weekend masses in the UD chapel and/or weekday masses in the University Residence Halls. Students from other faith traditions are expected to be involved in music ministry at their preferred place of worship in the greater Dayton area.

Chaminade Scholars in Music are encouraged to enroll in classes that fulfill requirements for the Certificate in Church Music offered through the UD Music Department.

It is expected that music students in the Chaminade Scholars program will intern during their senior year as a music minister in a local parish or other place of worship.
