There is a growing body of literature with a rich and promising set of answers to the question, “What can I do with a women’s and gender studies major? While many of the answers are similar to those that might be offered for any liberal arts degree, the history of continued learning, community and organizational leadership, and social service that women’s studies graduates have shown is also distinctive to the field.
Women’s and gender studies graduates at the University of Dayton and elsewhere have always parlayed their integrative perspectives and analytical acumen successfully into a wide range of fields. Historically, women’s and gender studies has served generally to prepare students for future service, leadership, professional work, and also for graduate study in a variety of disciplines, interdisciplinary fields, and professional areas. Some recent studies indicate that women’s and gender studies graduates tend to gravitate towards professional work in the areas of health, education, law, and social services, as well as for non-profit and/or public-policy organizations. Many pursue advanced degrees. The kinds of connected thinking, critical analysis, and creative problem-solving that women’s and gender studies requires are clearly valuable and readily adaptable skills in today’s world.
