Chaminade Scholars Program

What is the Chaminade Scholar Program?

The Chaminade Scholars Program is part of the University of Dayton's Program for Christian Leadership initiated by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. This unique program challenges students to explore theologically the reality of their calling through Baptism. It encourages students to make commitments of service - whether as lay people, religious, or clergy - to their professions, churches, and communities. Chaminade Scholars are dedicated to their academic and spiritual lives and to the development of leadership skills that will help them make a difference as thoughtful and committed Christians. All Chaminade Scholars have in common a set of specially designed programs, leadership experiences, and seminars.

During their time at the University of Dayton, Chaminade Scholars receive personal mentoring by a faculty member and are prepared for special leadership opportunities. As Chaminade Scholars explore vocation and prepare for their life's work, they develop meaningful, faith-based relationships with vowed and lay Marianists. Through close association with the Marianists, students learn that faith and reason work together, that the heart and head are inextricably linked, and that reflection and prayer lead to action in service to the community.

The Chaminade Scholars Program recognizes that the Spirit provides many gifts, and God calls us to serve in many ways: ordained ministry, scholarly work, leadership roles in churches and communities, music ministry, and other tasks that advance the mission of "renewing the face of the earth." Through coursework and mentoring, University of Dayton faculty and staff will help Chaminade Scholars explore and discover what God calls them to be and help them to prepare to say "Yes!" to that calling.

Who is Chaminade?

Blessed William Joseph Chaminade (1761-1850) founded the Marianist family, which today includes four branches: the priests and brothers of the society of Mary (SM), the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (FMI), the Alliance Mariale (AM), and Marianist Lay Communities (MLC). The priests and brothers of the Society of Mary established the University of Dayton. Father Chaminade believed that all Christians, not just clergy and religious, are called by God to holiness. Pope John Paul II beatified Father Chaminade on September 3, 2000.
