The Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education at the University of Dayton presents you with a unique opportunity to visit Spain and to have a taste of its extraordinary culture. Experience Spain 2008!!! -- May 15 through 28 -- is an enriching travel experience through a land of magic and contrasts. Our trip to Spain is a celebration of diversity, an opportunity to enjoy an exceptional monumental heritage and to experience a vibrant spirit of time and history. Tradition and modernity harmoniously coexist in each of the cities we will explore. Spain is also known as the country of friendliness and good-feeling because its animation and its joy of living are contagious.
Experience Spain 2008!!! blends millennia of history and modern times. Our first destination will be Segovia, the jewel of Castile, declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO. There, we will see how two thousand years ago the Romans created a perfect fusion of art and engineering. Next, we will visit the intimate corners of Toledo, another World Heritage city, the capital of the Visigoths in the sixth century, and La Mancha, the land of Don Quixote’s adventures. Sevilla, our next destination, preserves magnificent examples of the Arab civilization that influenced Spain for eight centuries until 1492. Our next stop, Madrid, the capital of Spain, is embellished by splendid eighteenth century buildings and beautiful parks and gardens. The Prado Museum, one of the world’s greatest galleries, and the Reina Sofía Museum display paintings from the 12th century to the most recent Spanish and international artists. From Madrid, we will travel to Logroño, known as the cradle of the Spanish language, and we will visit the world renown Vineyards of Vivanco, including a wine museum. Next, we will go to Bilbao to admire the extraordinary Guggenheim Museum. And after Zaragoza, one of the centers of spirituality and Marianist devotion as reflected by its famous Cathedral, we will visit Barcelona, a modern urban center and its impressive 330-foot-tall Sagrada Familia Cathedral, designed by the architect Antonio Gaudí, a masterpiece of innovation and creativity.
Experience Spain 2008!!! includes a sample of distinctive Spanish traditional and new culinary delights. We will also experience a night of unique Flamenco music and dance, and visits to the famous Vineyards of Vivanco, museums, cathedrals, castles and monuments along with brief introductions to Spain’s daily life and government. Our program allows ample time for walking, exploring, and shopping on your own. Visiting Spain means to live an experience that you will never forget, as the poet Longfellow beautifully expressed: “How much of my young heart, O Spain, / Went out to thee in days of yore!”
