Integrated Natural Science Sequence (INSS)

The Integrated Natural Science Sequence (INSS) provides scientific literacy to students who are not majoring in science or engineering.

Students completing B.A. degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences may use the sequence as part of the liberal studies curriculum.  Many students in the School of Education also complete the INSS.

The INSS is an integrated sequence with each course building on the previous course.  Courses are arranged in two tracks.  Each track includes knowledge fundamental to scientific literacy and explores evolution, energy, and the environment. One track focuses on the human environment and the other on the global environment.  Students may choose between the tracks.

SCI 190, The Physical Universe, is the foundational course for both tracks.  It covers the principles of physical science.

The Human Environmental Track then focuses on the molecular view of matter and the chemistry of life processes in SCI 220, The Chemical World.  The final course in this track, SCI 240, Biology and Human Health, focuses on biomedical science and human health and disease.

The Global Environmental Track advances to consider the evolution of the earth, chemical evolution on the early earth, the origin of life, and environmental earth issues in SCI 210, The Dynamic Earth.  The final course in this track, SCI 230, Organisms, Evolution and Environment, emphasizes ecology and environmental biological issues.
