International studies is a multidisciplinary major designed to meet the needs of students interested in acquiring a broad-based, international perspective for eventual careers in areas such as government service, international business, education and social service.

We live in a rapidly changing world with an expanding population, limited resources and evolving technologies and social organizations. Concern is growing about peace and security, the environment and human rights. Global interdependence makes Americans' well being increasingly linked to an ability to communicate and work effectively with people from other parts of the world, and to seek solutions to problems which transcend national boundaries. The context in which today's students lead their professional and personal lives will be increasingly multicultural and global in scope, demanding new levels of international knowledge — knowledge of other countries, cultures, languages and geography.

Majors are strongly encouraged to participate in study abroad programs to deepen their language proficiency, knowledge of other cultures and understanding of another country. The University of Dayton sponsors study abroad programs in England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Quebec and Spain. An immersion program is also designed for students interested in development in Third World countries. Students may participate in accredited study abroad programs run by other colleges and universities and transfer credits with appropriate approval.
