What are the living arrangements? Summer: Participants live together in an intentional community setting, in UD housing, arranged by the Semester of Service Program.
Semester: Participants remain in their current living arrangements (i.e. living with their chosen roommates in on-campus or off-campus housing).
How will housing fees be paid? Participants have the option of deducting fees from their living allowance (salary) to cover the cost of room and board.
If I take a semester off, will I lose my spot in the lottery? No, you will be registered as a full time co-op student, while living in University housing. Co-op students automatically receive 15 credit hours for the lottery, thus maintaining your placement in the lottery.
Will I lose my financial aid? No! Your financial aid package will not be affected by a Semester or Summer of Service.
Can I take classes while participating in a Semester or Summer of Service? Due to your status as a co-op student while participating in the program, you will not be allowed to take additional classes.
Can I have an outside job? Semester of Service is a full-time job. In addition to the 37-40 hours a week students dedicate to their service sites, participants also take part in a three hour class meeting each week. Due to this very busy schedule, we recommend that students not have jobs outside of the program. However, outside jobs are considered on a case by case basis with the director.
Will I lose health insurance if I am not taking classes? Summer: No! Health insurance agencies require two terms of full-time studies to be considered an active student. As long as you took classes in the preceding fall and winter semesters you are a full-time student.
Semester: As a co-op student your health insurance remains active.
What are the program's beginning and ending dates? Winter Semester 2007: Janary 7, 2008 until May 2, 2008 Summer Semester 2008: May 12, 2008 until August 1, 2008 Fall Semester 2008: August 25, 2008 to December 19, 2008
Do I have to pay tuition? NO! There is no tuition fee, however, there is a $65.00 fee. This is the only cost to you outside of housing and food.
Who chooses the agency at which I will serve? There is an interview process with both student and agency. After a student interviews at the agencies, the program coordinators will do their best to match the student's first choice of site with the agency's first choice of student.
