Adventure Central is a youth education center that targets urban youth, k - age 19 during out of school hours. At the center, youth learn about their environment through science and nature studies, learn to use computer technology, and are involved in homework assistance.

Student would be planning and conducting programs, tutoring, leading field trips etc. May also aid in all phases of programming, exhibit maintenance, and building upkeep; spring semester hours would include evenings 4 days per week.

Applicants best suited are those interested in youth development, teaching, social work, or science education. They should also have an interest in science and nature plus a strong desire to work with children in an urban setting.

Dakota Center

Dakota center is a community center which serves inner-west Dayton. They provide quality programs and activities for at-risk youth, families, and seniors. Programs include: visual arts, crafts, pottery, computer training, after-school academic tutoring program for youth, senior nutrition, Health Fairs with on-going health education, job training, and recreation and sports. Student would assist executive and program directors with developing new programs and implementing current ones; provide program information for monthly activity guide; organize and supervise field trips.

Applicants must be willing to adapt to urban surroundings, work with youth and seniors and have good communication skills.

Daybreak Teen Shelter

Daybreak is a residential shelter for teenagers experiencing problems at home. The shelter provides residential facilities, education for teens during the day, educational outreach to local schools, transitional housing, and skill training.

Student will assist staff in coordinating program activities to ensure that client needs are addressed; provide tutoring to youth; assist in youth educational groups and activities; assist clients in job searching; assist case managers in home visits and other case management activities, and provide child care while mothers are in counseling and assist staff in conducting research.

Applicants must have good reasoning ability, problem-solving skills, ability to interpret and follow technical instructions and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

East End Community Services Corporation Youth Development Center

East End Community Services Corporation is a non-profit, grassroots community organization whose mission is to empower youth and families in inner East Dayton. The YDC provides a safe place during after-school hours; supports youth academically; teach job and life-skills and help youth with post-secondary planning; learn about their cultural heritage; participate in service projects.

Student at the YDC would be an adult presence in the center, a role model for youth able to build caring relationships with them; assuring that the youth conduct themselves in a safe, orderly and constructive manner while learning positive life skills. Will work with YDC director and staff to develop and implement weekly programs for youth across a range of activities as: homework help, meal planning and preparation, computer training and field trips. Recreational interactions provide other opportunities for modeling responsible behavior.

Applicants must be at least 19 years old (preferably 20), mature, capable of being a positive role model. They must enjoy youth work and possess a clean criminal background check (BCI).

Be honest, dependable, with good communication skills. Prefer a major in social science or education with experience working with inner-city teens, if possible.

East End Community Services Corporation Milagro de Mujer and Stone Soup Program Assistant and Community Advocate

East End Community Services Corporation is a non-profit, grassroots community organization whose mission is to empower youth and families in inner East Dayton. The Milagro de Mujer and Stone Soup are forums for Hispanic and Appalachian women in Dayton to discuss issues of health, safety, and community. SOS interns also have the opportunity to assist with community advocacy activities (dealing with issues related to building community like neighborhood clean-ups, quality housing, expelling prostitution and drug houses, etc.) and socials in the Twin Towers neighborhood.

Applicants must be at least 19 years old, relate well to people, possess strong leadership skills, follow directions well, and be motivated. Applicants must also have the ability to develop meaningful goals and objectives and possess excellent organizational and communication skills.

For the Milagro de Mujer Program -- applicants must have a desire to work with the Hispanic population in Dayton and be partially fluent in the Spanish language.

The Miami Valley Literacy Council (MVLC)

The Miami Valley Literacy Council (MVLC) believes in the power of education to transform people's lives. As the primary, volunteer-based literacy provider in our community, it is the mission of MVLC to provide literacy services through one-on-one and small group instruction. By making basic literacy resources available to individuals at the very lowest level of reading ability, we can strengthen individuals and families, build self-sufficiency and improve the quality of life for individuals and their families across our community.

Students lead intakes, one-on-one tutoring, small group instruction, and summer camp educational programming. This site provides the opportunity to work with immigrant and refugee populations. Students studying foreign languages may be able to use their skills.

The Salvation Army Booth House

The Booth House is a substance free half-way house and shelter for men. The primary goal of the Booth House is to assist clients with employment searches, monetary savings, housing, and education.

Students assist in the House Manager and Social Work Departments. Tasks can include case management, monitoring clients, intakes and assessments, tutoring, job referrals, housing placements, and companionship.

Applicants must possess people skills, patience, flexibility, compassion, and dependability.

Dayton Christian Center

The Dayton Christian Center is a neighborhood family center on the West Side of Dayton focusing on before school and after school tutoring and care programs.

Students tasks can include the after school programs and tutoring, program planning and implementation, publicity, and assistance in the development of the Family Center and youth care center.
