The College of Arts and Sciences sponsors extraordinary student projects through the Learn, Lead, and Serve Program.
Supported by an anonymous donor and grants from the Levin Foundation, the McGregor Fund, and the Wallace Foundation, the Learn, Lead, and Serve Program enables students to pursue special projects that connect academic education with experiential learning and the exploration of service opportunities.
Preference is given to students whose projects explore connections among disciplines and whose work strengthens community through leadership and service. Students who receive Learn, Lead, and Serve Awards conduct individual or small-group projects under the mentorship of a faculty member, and they are expected to present their research findings in a public context.
Learn, Lead, and Serve Program applicants are also eligible for a new student award, begun in 2007, which recognizes the best student project that unites research, leadership, and service in an international setting. The International Learn, Lead, and Serve Award is endowed in honor of extraordinary past recipients of Learn, Lead, and Serve grants.
For an example of a project supported by the Learn, Lead, and Serve Program, please visit the Center for Social Concern website to view Leslie Cebula’s (’06) documentary video, “Seeking a Different Destiny.” Leslie’s project, “A Study of Women’s Communication Strategies in Guatemala,” enabled her to study domestic violence in Guatemala through six weeks of summer research and service with Nuevos Horizontes, a women’s group in Quetzaltenango. Leslie pursued her project in conjunction with the Center for Social Concern’s Summer Immersion program in Guatemala.
